Wildlife photographer Anne Armfield commissioned this map as a surprise gift for her husband to commemorate their many trips to East Africa. As clients do, she gave me a list of elements she wanted included on her canvas: a map of East Africa with 36 place names important to the Armfields; an inset map of the whole African continent; illustrations of the animals she and her husband love; various animal skins; a particular Hemingway quote; a hot-air balloon; Maasai beading; a fishing boat; a porcupine quill. My job was to weave all these disparate threads into a harmonious composition. All of the animal and bird depictions are based on Anne’s incredible photos; it was a pleasure and honor to collaborate with her.
