Charlie Owen, an accomplished amateur cyclist, tackles Tour de France routes for fun. To celebrate his fiftieth birthday, his wife commissioned this canvas as a surprise gift. Here are three of his French cycling trips, each a separate map to provide the detailed scale necessary. Choosing among the various ways to depict mountains, I took a painterly approach.
